Qualify Before You Close: The Questions Your AI Voice Agent Should Ask Every Lead
A good AI voice agent doesn't just answer the phone. It asks a few smart questions so your closers spend their time on buyers who are ready, not on tire-kickers.
Every small business owner knows the feeling: you spend twenty minutes on a call, build rapport, send a quote, and then learn the buyer had no budget and no timeline. That time came straight out of a deal you could have closed.
An AI voice agent can take that first conversation off your plate, but only if it asks the right questions.
Start with what they want
Open with the need, not the sales pitch. "What are you looking for?" and "What made you reach out today?" get the customer talking and tell your team what to prepare. The answer also shows how serious they are. Someone with a clear picture of what they want is usually further along than someone who is just browsing.
Ask about timing
"When are you hoping to get started?" is one of the most useful questions in sales. A buyer who needs something this month belongs in a different lane than one who is thinking about next year. Both are worth keeping, but they need different follow-up.
Talk about money without making it awkward
Many owners skip the budget question because it feels pushy. A voice agent can ask it in a calm, friendly way: "Do you have a budget range in mind, or would you like to hear about financing options?" Offering a path forward keeps the call positive and gives your closer what they need to quote.
Confirm who decides
"Is anyone else involved in the decision?" saves a lot of wasted follow-ups. If a partner or spouse needs to weigh in, your closer can invite them to the next call instead of chasing a yes that was never theirs to give.
Hand off the right leads
Once the agent has the answers, it should do something with them: log them in your CRM, tag the lead as hot, warm, or nurture, and pass the hot ones to a human closer right away. That's exactly how Ozkra works: the AI voice agent handles the first call and the qualifying questions, and a real closer steps in when the buyer is ready.
Keep the list short. Four or five questions is plenty, and the call should still feel like a conversation, not a form.
